Farmers Markets for the 2024 Season
Once again the nice weather is here which means day trips in the Ottawa and surrounding areas visiting farmers marketing and small towns. This year I put together a short post on the farmers markets I hope to visit in 2024. While I had great intentions of organizatin my summer weekends driving around the regions visiting new farmers markets, my post ended with more farmers markets I want to visit than weekends. I did manage to make it to one farmers markets this spring and I newer market at that, the Greely Good Market. This summer during my visits to farmers markets and small towns I’m planning on trying to visit a local walking trail or a local food truck or vendor as well. This could be a food truck and vendor participating at the market or just local to the town. We’ll see how this evoloves over the visits this season. As starting point for the season, here is my experience at the Greely Good Market to start off the 2024 farmers market season.
Summer 2023 and Farmers Markets in Ottawa and Surrounding Areas
My second summer visiting farmers markets in Ottawa. I started with the Carp Farmers Market on Father’s Day and enjoyed just walking around. I noticed a lot of dogs this summer. Of course, this year is different for me, as I’m a dog owner again. Didn’t bring my dog with me as he’s still a puppy but thoroughly enjoyed just watching. I didn’t buy and produce during this visit nor did I indulge in baked goods, I did try an arepa for the first time. It was stuffed with pulled beef, lentils, and cheese. Very filly, a bit messy, but well worth it. I also bought some sweet Nigerian bread. It was good but the packaging left something to be desired and the bread did get stale quite quickly. However, it was very soft and fluffy.
Canada Day 2023 proved to provide some pleasant farmers’ market surprises. I visited the following farmers markets on Canada Day, the North Gower Farmers Market, the Manotick Farmers Market, and the Log Farm, Barrhaven Farmers Market. I also stopped at the Millers Farm Market & Garden Centre. A separate Canada Day farmers market crawl post will expand on each of these market visits.
July and August 2023 were good months for market visits. While I didn’t get out every weekend, I did get out most weekends. I also learned about other markets nearby and have a number on my list for next year. Where did I go this summer? In no particular order, the Alta Vista Farmers Market, Perth’s Farmers Market, Vankleek Hill Farmers Market, Prescott Farmers’ and Crafters’ Market, Arnprior Farmers Market, Wakefield Farmers Market, Cumberland Farmers Market, Lansdowne Market, and the Parkdale Night Market. The latter wasn’t a true farmers market, but it did have some vendors selling produce.
There are many more markets to visit, not just on weekends but during the weekdays as well. I’ve started a list of farmers’ markets by day of the week to help plan out your day trips.
Fall 2023 Visits to Farmers Markets in Ottawa
Fall has started and the fall produce is coming out at the farmers markets in Ottawa and surrounding areas. This means a lot of apples and pumpkins! September has started with a few farmer’s market visits. It started with the Beechwood Farmers Market in New Edinburgh, Ottawa. We had plans to visit the Cornwall Kinsmen Farmers Market and then the Williamsburg County Market on the way home. The Cornwall Kinsmen Farmers Market was great but as we drove by the Williamsburg County Market, there weren’t many vendors. Our fault probably because we were a bit late and it was the last hour. We’ll have to try and revisit that market either later this season or next year. We also learned that the Richmond Village Farmers’ is closed for the season. Another market for the 2024 farmers market visit list!
A half day off work and a drive out to Maxville, ON proved to be a disappointment when we learned that the Maxville Farmers Market doesn’t allow dogs. We had a wonderful surprise with the Alymer farmers market and Aylmer Marina. However, the month ended with less than thrilling visits to the Ripon Farmers Market and the Plateau Farmers Market.
Farmers Markets in Ottawa and Surrounding Area – Summer 2022
As the weeks go on I’m going to be visiting different farmers’ markets in Ottawa, ON, and the surrounding area. I hope to share some photos, insights, and my impressions of the farmer’s markets in Ottawa and hopefully inspire some of you to check them out. I’ll try and include the different produce baked goods, handicrafts, and more that are offered at the various markets. Keep an eye out for changes and updates to this page as the summer of 2022 continues.
The first market of the season was the farmer’s market in Kanata.
The second farmers market in the Ottawa region was the Metcalfe Farmer’s Market.
On the May long weekend, I visited the Almonte Farmer’s Market. The market was very cute but what will make it very memorable is that I visited it just before the derecho of 2022! Derecho of 2022 is definitely another post!
The first weekend of June 2022 was a visit to the farmers market in Carp. The big surprise with such a big farmers market in such a tiny town!
This week I went to the Carleton Place farmers market. A lot more baked goods and really yummy, unique onion chutneys and jams and of course another very cute little town.
Father’s Day weekend was a visit to the Stittsville farmer market. This one has a name, @The Barn, and more baked goods!
