Is saffron a spice? Yes. Saffron is one of the most precious and expensive spices. It is a red and yellowish thread like spice originating from the crocus sativus flower. Today most of the saffron is cultivated in Iran, Greece, Morocco, and India and exported throughout the world.
Saffron has a subtle fragrance and slightly sweet taste.
Why is saffron so expensive?
Good question. Each flower only produces three thread, stigmas, of saffron. The flower itself only blooms for one week each year. So while wondering if saffron is a spice it is more than just a spice, it is a rare spice! What makes it even more the “diva of spices” is it must be harvested by hand in the mid morning when the flower is still closed to protect the stigmas. And to top it all off, about 1000 threads are required to produce one ounce of the spice.
