What are cloves? Where do they come from? And what are the benefits of cloves? For starters, cloves come from the flower buds of the clove tree, and evergreen also knowns as Syzygium aromaticum. Cloves are grown in India and Madagascar but Indonesia is most associated with clove production. Cloves are commonly used as a spice either whole or ground. It is a staple spice in Indian cuisine but is also a main ingredient in gingerbread. It has a very distinct, pungent, aromatic fragrance and flavour. But it is also used in traditional medicine. There are many health benefits from cloves.
Health benefits of cloves
- Cloves are nutrient rich, including fiber, vitamins and minerals such as manganese
- It is high in antioxidants. Cloves contain evgenol a natural antioxidant.
- Close can kill bacteria. Cloves have antimicrobial properties which means they can stop the growth of micro organisms like bacteria. As a a result cloves can be great for oral health. E.g. a mouth wash consisting of tea tree oil, cloves and basil can help improve oral health.
- It may improve liver health.
- Cloves may help regulate blood sugar.
- They may promote bone health.
- Cloves may reduce stomach ulcers.

Ingredients
- 1 tbsp whole cloves
- 1 c water
Directions
- Boil water with cloves. Add in basil
- Let cool and steep, like tea.
- Strain.
- Use like any other mouth wash.
- Don’t swallow.
- Optional: Add a few drops of tea tree oil.
