In early July 2023, I visited the Vankleek Hill Farmers Market and was pleasantly surprised. While it was small, it was compact with a variety of vendors including a vendor selling dog treats, Ruby Treats. My dog is a little fussy when it comes to dog treats but he loved Ruby’s Treats. That’s a story for another post! Through chatting with Ruby Treats owner, Kelly Bragg, I learned about the Alta Vista Farmers Market where she also sells her dog treats.
I just had to check out this market because it’s not far from home and I love farmers’ markets! It was an absolute gem of a market! It’s located in front of a church with parking. It’s not far at all from one of the city’s main streets, so easy to get to. You don’t have to drive out of the city to get to it, so even better. It’s in the heart of a residential area, not far from grocery stores and other amenities so perfect for locals. The vendors are varied including produce, baked goods, dog treats, jams, and more. It is also part of the Ottawa Street Markets.
Ottawa Street Markets
A quick overview of the Ottawa Street Markets. There are 4 farmers’ markets that are part of this group the Ottawa Street Markets, Beechwood, Elgin, Alta Vista, and Carlington markets. There is an onsite market for each but now also an online market, thanks to COVID! You can go online, choose the items you want, pay for them, and pick them up during the specified hours at a pickup spot near the market of your choice. Such a great idea for getting fresh produce, meat, crafts, and other local items and also great exposure for small and independent farmers and, artisans. It’s definitely worth learning more about these Ottawa Street Markets and of course, visiting them! While I haven’t been to the other 3 markets in the group of 4, I’m very pleased with what I saw at the Alta Vista Farmers Market and will plan visits to the others, so stay tuned!
Who was at the Alta Vista Farmers Market?
Who caught my eye at the Alta Vista Farmers Market? As mentioned above, Ruby’s Treats, HounDeli, another dog treat vendor, and Pestle and Pods, who offer powders and spice mixes. And yes, my dog enjoyed the HounDelit treats very much! There were lots of vegetables, baked goods, and even some prepared food vendors, and as always at these markets, a local performer for entertainment.
Definitely a market worth visiting along with the others in the Ottawa Street Markets group.
